The Healing Power of Meditation for Physical Health
~ Guest Article By Mahadeva Ishaya, Essential Yoga for Men. Much has been written on the healing power of meditation and there comes a point for many of us on our health journey when we recognize the power of going inward. It took me a while, but eventually I got it - the healer is within. I realized that there was wisdom in my body, that it already knew how to heal every part of itself. My job is to do the best I can to allow it to do so. It was a humbling moment when I finally took responsibility and recognized that my lifestyle was a big contributor to my poor health. But that moment was also glorious, because it meant that I had it within me to turn things around and make different choices. Changes On The OutsideSome of those choices are simple, obvious, and yet, can have a profound impact. Eat better food, sleep better, engage in some form of exercise and you give yourself a great opportunity to improve your physical health. Yet perhaps the most overlooked aspect of bodily health is in the impact your mental state plays. Are you a half-full, or half-empty kind of person? Wherever your mind goes, there your body will follow. When you feel embarrassed your face turns red. When you anticipate a meal you start to salivate. The body takes its cues from the mind. So if you are desirous of health then taking the time to re-order your inner landscape is worthy of prioritizing. The Healing Power of Meditation That's where meditation comes in. Having a reliable meditation practice allows you to experience deep inner peace, beyond the chaos of thoughts. As the mind experiences the profound states the body experiences deep rest.
As we know, rest is a powerful trigger for healing. Break your arm and it is put in plaster, ensuring that it rests and heals. If you get a bad cold then the best thing to do is rest and let your body heal itself. The levels of rest experienced in meditation tend to be very deep, sometimes even more so than deep sleep. This allows the energy that is normally used for other, active, functions to be used for cleansing, repairing and creating cells. Going Back To Health and BalanceAs powerful as that process is, the healing power of meditation goes beyond that. For the blueprints that these cells are actually built from begins to evolve. As we have been stuck in mental patterns and habitual behaviours, our cells have been rebuilt accordingly. As the unhelpful beliefs drop away through regular meditation we tend to develop a more positive, balanced and healthy outlook, and as such our body is built to this new design. This is a continual process, and is one of the reasons why people who practice regular meditation often look and feel younger - their bodies are not being built from a stressed design. So as well as the many spiritual benefits, it is important not to overlook the healing power of meditation if your priority is to improve your physical health.
